Kate Winslet Takes on Role of War Correspondent Lee Miller in New Film
In her latest film Lee, Kate Winslet portrays the extraordinary life of American war correspondent and photographer Lee Miller. Directed by Ellen Kuras, the film also features performances by Andy Samberg, Alexander Skarsgard, and Marion Cotillard.
Lee Miller, a trailblazer of her time, initially gained fame as a model before becoming a photographer for British Vogue. During World War II, Miller sought to make a difference by reporting from the front lines. She covered the war in France and Germany, capturing harrowing images as Nazi concentration camps were being liberated. Her photographs remain some of the most iconic from that era.
"For me, it was an untold story," Winslet said about bringing Miller's life to the screen.
At the Australian premiere of Lee, held at Sydney’s Randwick Ritz, Winslet expressed her excitement about being back in the country. "It is very exciting, and I haven’t been here in a long time actually to launch a film so I am really excited about it," she told The Daily Telegraph.
Speaking about Miller's significance, Winslet emphasized the importance of bringing women of historical importance into the spotlight. "Lee Miller was redefining what it means to be feminine, to mean resilience and power... Her work was so phenomenally important, documenting the voiceless victims of conflict," Winslet said.
Miller’s son, Antony Penrose, was also present at the Sydney premiere, celebrating the release of the film, which opens nationwide this Thursday. Winslet, who has enjoyed a stellar career with numerous awards including an Academy Award for The Reader in 2009, was thrilled to showcase the legacy of a woman who, like herself, used her platform to shed light on important issues.
